The night when we celebrate the successes of the academic year, Ormiston College’s annual Speech Night, was held this week at the Sleeman Centre at Chandler.

After a brief welcome from College Captain, Brittany Bell, the traditional entry of the official party, consisting of the Headmaster, the Chairman and Members of the Board, Executive and Teaching Staff took place. This was followed by the Headmaster’s address.

The entertainment throughout the night was exceptional, as always, with the OC Chorale and OC Rock Band setting the tone with their energetic performance of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Redlands Councillor, Tracey Hughes, was invited to make the academic presentations to the Junior School students prior to a superb performance of We Are The Future by the Combined Chorale. Academic presentations were then made to the Secondary School with assistance from alumnus Cameron Ho (2002) and State Member for Cleveland, Dr Mark Robinson. This was followed by the presentation of the individual Subject Dux prizes by the Ormiston College Dux of 2017, Lisa Ban.

A multimedia presentation created by the OC TV team, in conjunction with Mr Jason Taggart and Mrs Sandra Middleton, was enjoyed by students, staff and parents alike. The presentation provided a wonderful snapshot in the life of Ormiston College.

As well as congratulating and acknowledging academic success, Speech Night allows the College to acknowledge two groups of special students: Year 6 and Year 12 students. Feelings of mixed emotions were experienced by the parents of the Year 6 students when the names of their children were called out, as it signified the end of their Junior School days.An even stronger sense of emotion would have been felt by the parents of the Year 12 students, who were just one week off graduation. As the Year 6 and Year 12 students turned to shake hands, yet another step had been taken on the Ormiston College pathway.

Two of our special guests, Redland City Mayor, Karen Williams and alumnus Gareth Hewson (1997) presented the Special Individual Awards to Junior and Secondary students prior to a musical performance by the Symphonic Band.

College Captains, Brittany Bell and Sam Meaney gave individual speeches; both were heartfelt and sincere, making the audience extremely proud of the fine example they have set as leaders of the College.A vote of thanks was then given by John Miller, Chairman of the Board prior to the assembly standing for the school prayer. The Symphonic Band then played the recessional for the official party.

Speech Night acknowledges the tireless efforts and dedication of so many students. We are very proud of every single one of them.
