The Year 6 cohort started this term with a visit from Aunty Sandra Delaney, a local woman from Quandamooka country, who has dedicated many years of research to maintain and strengthen Quandamooka culture. She is passionate about preserving Aboriginal knowledge and the cultural heritage of Quandamooka.
The accomplished artist, author and traditional linguist, shared with the Year 6 students her insights on traditions, dreaming and creation stories, the connection to land and country Quandamooka people have and how these are reflected in her animations and artworks.
She introduced them to her native Jandai language, spoken on Quandamooka country which encompasses North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island, the bay islands and the coastal mainland from the mouth of the Brisbane River to the Logan River. Jandai is also part of the Yuggera language group.
The students finished the session by drawing their own stories or spiritual connections they may have to animals, land and country.
