National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday 22 May, students from Prep to Year 2 took part in National Simultaneous Storytime in the Centre for Learning and Innovation. This special storytime event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association of Australia. Each year a book by an Australian author and illustrator is selected to be shared with audiences of libraries, childcare centres and schools across the country. This year it was Matt Cosgrove and his beloved children's book about a pair of Alpacas with Maracas no less.

Ormiston College students joined 1,085,587 children Australia-wide in taking time out of their day to read 'Alpacas with Maracas'. In the lead up to the event, students were involved in making their own alpaca masks and maracas, to shake-shake-shake along with the story. Special guest readers from our executive team joined in the fun, sporting orange clothes or ties to match the book cover, maracas and even Mexican hats to get into the spirit. Our students love reading Matt Cosgrove's stories and his books are flying off the shelves in our junior library.

Reading events like National Simultaneous Storytime are great ways to generate excitement around books and reading, to encourage a lifetime passion in our young readers. In conjunction with National Simultaneous Storytime, our Prep to Year 2s joined us at lunchtime in the Makerspace to get crafty and make their own maracas. Students had the option to make ‘Macca’ or his pal, ‘Al’ as a puppet with moving limbs, or a soft (cotton) woolly alpaca, or a face mask. This was a great opportunity to practise their cutting, gluing, colouring and constructing skills! The event was very well-attended – a sure sign that alpaca fever has hit OC following the story this morning!
