OC brings home Second Place at the Da Vinci Decathlon

On Thursday 26 May Year 7 students participated in their first da Vinci Decathlon at A.B Patterson College.

The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, philosophy, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge.

Not having entered this competition before we had no experience in this type of event and we spent 6 lessons in preparation, looking at last year’s papers and working out how each member could contribute to the ten academic challenges that make up the decathlon.

In the individual challenges we won Mathematics and Chess and placed third in Cartography and Code Breaking. To place second overall on our first attempt at the da Vinci Challenge was a testament to the teamwork, communication and academic skills of the team members. Year 7 student, Koby Wood, said he enjoyed the decathlon, “it was a fun day, we had to work as a team to make sure everyone was included and to use each others’ strengths.”

Well done Year 7!
