Opportunity of a lifetime!

At the end of 2015, current Year 12 student David Winten travelled to Washington DC in the United States for an exclusive and private tour of the Pentagon. David’s initial interest in the Pentagon sparked from his aspirations to become an Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force in 2017 after graduating Year 12. Over the last 18 months, David has been fortunate enough to develop mentor relationships with some senior military staff, including Colonel Jason Hedges of the Australian Army. Colonel Hedges invited David to the Pentagon for a private tour and lunch at the Embassy where David had the opportunity to meet Key Chiefs of Divisions.

Headquarters of the Department of Defense, the Pentagon is one of the world's largest office buildings. The Pentagon is virtually a city in itself. Approximately 23,000 employees, both military and civilian, contribute to the planning and execution of the defence of the United States of America. It pays to have friends in high places as David was able to tour parts of the Pentagon which are usually off limits to the general population and he gained an unique insight into the operations of this iconic building.

During their final year, all Year 12 students engage in a personalised program of career education. Each year, a number of Year 12 students consider a career in the Armed Forces. In David’s case, the initiative he has shown to connect with mentors from the Australian Army has led to an opportunity of a lifetime.
