On Friday 19 February, the Year 10 art students attended the Redlands Art Gallery to view the ‘The Last Supper’ by Ken + Julia Yonetani – a sculptural installation made entirely of Murray River salt. The work comments on the increasing salinity levels in Australia and unsustainable agricultural practices. Students were in awe and studied the artwork closely, looking at how it was created - the artists give no clues away.
Also on show was ‘Attitude as Form’ which presented the work of 22 designers exposing a diversity of ideas in the fields of fashion, art, craft and design. Following this exhibition, a connection was made with Bianca Mavrick, one of the exhibiting artists, who recently conducted a design workshop with the Year 11 art students. Both exhibitions highlighted the innovative ways these artists work with their chosen materials encouraging sustainable art practices in the 21st century.
