Talented OC Musicians at Queensland Youth Orchestras

Four of our talented music students successfully auditioned in January for the Queensland Youth Orchestras. QYO is a world class youth orchestra organisation based in Brisbane. It includes three Orchestras, a String Orchestra, two Wind Ensembles and a Big Band with 470 musicians aged from 8 to 24 performing over 50 concerts each year. The ensembles are directed by some of Australia’s best known and most respected musicians and educators. Kristina Newton, Year 11 (Clarinet) and Alexis Parrish, Year 9 (Tenor Saxophone) learn from Timothy Harding, music tutor and Ormiston College Alumni. Hana O’Neill, Year 9 (Flute) studies with Rowena James. Charlotte Scanlan, Year 12 (Double Bass) learns with Dr John Varney here at OC and hopes to continue her studies in music performance next year. In addition to their busy performance schedule here at Ormiston College, these dedicated students attend weekly rehearsals at the Old Museum Building in Bowen Hills as well as camps, workshops and tours.

Hana spoke enthusiastically about the new friendships she has made, “It’s so good to be able to chat with people experiencing the same struggles and challenges on the instrument as I do."

Ormiston College will be very well represented by these diligent musicians who will gain valuable experience, a high level of musicianship, confidence and motivation by participating in this prestigious organisation. We wish them well for their exciting year ahead.
