Year 11 Design Excursion 8

Recently, Year 11 Design students visited Brisbane and Cleveland CBDs to consider what the urban and business precincts might look like in 2040.

Students excitedly explored King Street in Bowen Hills, one of the most recent urban renewal projects within the Brisbane CBD. This precinct was once the dairy sheds of the RNA (EKKA) Showgrounds, but over the past five years has undergone a major vibrant redevelopment. The urban development of this area was a demonstration of how life can be injected into an otherwise old and dreary part of the city. King Street now contains space for residential living, offices, restaurants, coffee shops and small businesses with a variety of design styles in one small area.

After their visit to King Street, students visited Cleveland CBD to investigate how they could infuse Cleveland with design ideas from King Street. Students were joined by Craig Addley, Lead Urban Space Designer for Walker Corporation who shared some of his industry knowledge to help students get their thinking and planning underway. Craig will also visit the students on campus throughout the project to check on the progress of ideas.

At the completion of this project, students will pitch their design ideas to an audience of 60+ people, consisting of their peers, parents, College staff and representatives of the Redland City Council. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work in a real-world environment.
