Young Leaders Day 2019

It is not everyday that you get an opportunity to listen to an Olympian share how she made her dreams a reality, an acclaimed author discuss the importance of persistence, find out why a person has dedicated their life to improving the education of Ugandan children and be moved by how a double amputee survivor has maintained a positive outlook on life.

On Friday 1 March, 18 Junior School student leaders, accompanied by myself (Mr Goulter), trekked into South Bank for the National Young Leaders Day. The day saw a crowd of 2700 Primary school students listen to speakers discuss their leadership journey and the attitudes and beliefs that have seen them succeed in their chosen areas.

Olympic swimmer, Cate Campbell, shared the importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in your dream. Children’s author, Matt Cosgrove, challenged the student leaders to find their passion and then persist with practising. Founder of the Cotton On Foundation, Tim Diamond, gave an emotional address about why he has dedicated his life to improving the education for Ugandan children. Students learnt how through showing courage and resilience Tim's foundation has raised over $90 million.

Double amputee and motivational speaker, John Coutis, captivated the audience with stories from his childhood and how at nearly every turn he has had to overcome challenges. John reiterated the importance of goals as they provide direction, purpose and strength.

The Ormiston College student leaders returned to school motivated to make a positive difference for our school and the wider community.
