Participation in cultural activities helps build a tight-knit community, develop school loyalty and friendships, gives individuals a deeper personal understanding and life-long skills.
Of course, our students often just see it as a whole lot of fun! From Prep through Junior School to Year 12, students benefit from the individualised attention, enthusiasm and commitment provided by specialist teachers in art, music, drama, and languages other than English.
The Music Department provides a vibrant, creative centre of excellence within the College. We strive to give a lifelong love of music to each student, encouraging and equipping them to achieve the highest level they can within one, or more, of the three key components of our private school Music Program.
Classroom music is a valued aspect of the academic program at Ormiston College. The academic music program is compulsory until Year 8 after which it becomes an elective. From Prep to Year 5, students enjoy two music lessons each week. Students in Years 6 - 8 receive one weekly lesson with a specialist music teacher. Students in Years 11 and 12 may choose to take six lessons per week, with advanced Year 12 performers benefiting from classes in Music Extension with a specialist Senior School Music Director.
Expert tuition is available to students across a full range of instruments, including voice, provided by specialist teachers predominantly through private lessons. Though participation is voluntary, over 250 students are involved in private education classes.
Over recent years our performers from the 15 instrumental ensembles and choirs have established themselves as outstanding performers and musicians. Ensembles involve students from both the Junior and Senior School, performing on-campus and in the community, with the elite ensembles enjoying the excitement and professional experience and satisfaction of the bi-annual Music Tour schedule. Each year music students enjoy the fun, camaraderie, and rhythms of the Junior School music camp, and have the opportunity to participate in the biennial music production. Senior Music Camps are held each year and a musical production every two years.

There are a wide range of instrumental ensembles within the music program, catering to all levels of skill and ability. Entry to some choral and instrumental groups is based on audition. Ormiston College Chamber Orchestra (OCCO), Symphonic Band, Symphony Strings, Wind Ensemble, Sonata Strings, Big Band, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Flute Choirs, Yardbirds Saxophone Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensembles, Other Short Term Chamber Ensembles.
The Ormiston College Lingo Lin Performing Arts Theatre provides a world-class venue for the many concerts and recitals held at the College each year by the students and by the community.
The fully air-conditioned theatre holds a 700-seat auditorium, 13 x 9 metre stage, scenery hoist providing for four scene changes, up-to-date staging technology, professional stage lighting and sound systems, dressing rooms, drama studio and individual music rooms.
The College also provides other music teaching areas including two music rooms in the Junior School with teaching studios dedicated to Junior School use. The Music Keyboard Laboratory provides a modern technology learning environment assisting in disciplines such as music composition.
